As our autumn Jewish holidays continue to roll along we stop to commemorate Simchat Torah, a celebratory day that immediately proceeds Sukkot. This holiday traditionally details the receiving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, leaving descendants for many years to come to celebrate the Jewish way…late night study parties!! Oh yeah! Today, festivities are more varied, but no less joyous, in the District. Look below for what’s happening tomorrow night!

In related news, the return of Gilad Shalit to his home in Israel after living the last five years as a Hamas hostage has caused a stir around the Jewish world at large. With a print subscription, you can access the Washington Jewish Week’s coverage from a local angle. GatherTheJews also features two intriguing opinion pieces on the subject—the pros and cons of the prisoner swap, and the implications for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership.

Chag sameach!

Sukkot 5772 and the DCJCC National Jewish Literary Festival on the Horizon!

Graphic courtesy of bitsela.com

Fall is a festive time for the Jews, particularly in DC! From October 23 to November 2, the Washington, DC Jewish Community Center is hosting its annual Hyman S. & Freda Bernstein Jewish Literary Festival. With authors ranging the gamut from fiction to nonfiction, children’s stories to memoirs, the festival features such events as readings, lectures and movie screenings.

As a writer and a Jewish enthusiast myself, I am always especially excited for this festival, and make sure to attend at least one reading per year. Check out my past reviews of Eileen Pollack and Elisa Albert, Zoe Heller, and Rebecca Goldstein.

As of sunset this Wednesday we have also been in the week of Sukkot, so Chag Sameach! GatherTheJews has a succinct list of upcoming celebrations around the District (there’s no way I can’t be a fan of the Yoda graphic complete with kipa and lulav! :P) I’d also encourage you to check out Occupy K Street, which features pictures and updates on the sukkah erected there. Stop by at 5:30 pm for some Sukkot Bible study as well.

Upcoming Events: October 10-16

Breaking the Fast 5772

Young professionals gather around YP@AI's Break Fast table after Yom Kippur / photo taken by Rachel Mauro

G’mar Chatima Tova! Now that High Holidays are over and Sukkot is on the horizon, the DC Jewish community is back in full fall swing. Be sure to check here for upcoming events!

In what’s become my tradition, I spent the day at Adas Israel and broke my fast with YP@AI. Although I didn’t see it, the afternoon interview featured Sheryl Gay Storberg interviewing David Brooks. And speaking of Yom Kippur events that I did not attend, if anyone has some recollections from the Kol Nidre service at Occupy DC, I’d love to hear about it!

Among the things I did see, here is Rabbi Steinlauf’s sermon about the power of longing. It was certainly a message that hit home for me personally, after a day of fasting and attempting to deal with the regrets of the year past so that I can more fully embrace the future. Check out the rest of his blog for more of his work.

Hope we are well rested, well fed, and moving towards the next holiday of erecting sukkahs in our backyards or synagogues. Shana tova and here’s to a sweet new year!

Upcoming Events: October 3-9
