DC Birthright Tweeters!

J-Fed’s Birthright Israel busses 248, 249, and the Alumni Leadership Mission, are all in Israel as I type, and I can prove it by following their live blogging and tweeting.

…can I just backtrack to say that I think I remember, back in summer of 2004, Hillel posting our itinerary online for our parents to follow, and this being the height of technology. Now I can log onto twitter randomly and pull up pictures of Masada or the Kotel taken just 15 minutes ago.

Random participants, doubtless equipped with awesome smart phones (I didn’t even have a digital camera with me!) are being re-tweeted on NextGen’s @JFGW_NextGen and Birthright Israel’s @NEXT_DC. You can also follow the blogs, complete with participant posts: Bus248, Bus 249, and the Alumni Leadership Mission.

You can even find videos posted in real time! Check out J-Fed’s YouTube page, conveniently named (a tee-hee) JewishDC. Enjoy! Am Yisrael Chai!

Jews, Jazz and Booze BBQ

I just adopted a kitty! (How could I not blog about this?)

Leah Mauro lounges on her cat bed. / photo courtesy of Rachel Mauro

As of last Shabbat, I have a new roommate! She is gray and white and orange, and although she can hide comfortably under my bed or couch, she also sees fit to occasionally climb walls, bookcases, and clothes on hangars. 😛 …we may have a little bit of work to do.

I named her Leah…my name is Rachel…she’s like my sister…get it? 😛 I adopted her from The Washington Animal Rescue League, a really amazing shelter, nationally known for its innovative, cageless facilities. And it just happens to be in our backyard! If you’re thinking of adopting a cat or a dog, I urge you to check this place out.

Still not convinced what cats have to do with Judaism? Oh really? Halacha, or Jewish law, does not prohibit owning pets. Our religion also has a lot to say on the ethical treatment of animals.

With all of this in mind, I have no lack of confidence that I can provide my Leah a good home filled with shalom and chesed. In the meantime, I think I’ve found the perfect Chanukah gift to give her when the time is right! 😛 Score!

Soulful Mizrahi Music meets Multimedia in Galeet Dardashti’s “The Naming”

Galeet Dardashti performs "The Naming" at the Washington Jewish Music Festival / photo taken by Rachel Mauro

Galeet Dardashti, a Persian Jewish vocal performer, captured the DCJCC stage Tuesday night as part of the annual Washington Jewish Music Festival.

However, it would be unfair to give her all of the credit. She was joined by five instrumentalists, playing everything from the cello and santoor to electronic amplification, plus three performers from SYREN Modern Dance. The lighting was kept low and moody and behind her, a screen lit up with graphic designs of praying women, Hebrew words, and other images associated with her songs.

“The Naming” focuses on fleshing out the lives of Biblical women, from Michal, the barren wife of King David, to Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob. Interjected with the haunting melodies, she offered spoken word narration about these women and the ones she grew up with in Iran. So beyond being entertained, the packed audience could also think about the roles of women throughout Jewish history.

This is the sort of performance that cannot be duplicated on a home stereo, but my major regret is that I did not buy Dardashti’s CD, which will not be available to the public until the fall. Other fans were disappointed at the lack of encore, but I took it she performed her full album!

The Washington Jewish Music Festival continues until June 13 with performances ranging from kiddie concerts to Irish/Jewish combos. For more information, follow the festival on Twitter here! Find my coverage of last year’s event here.
