Time for a Re-Brand

It’s not exactly as dramatic as all of that, but recent events have nudged me to take into account where I am, and what I want to gain from my Internet presence. To that effect, I’ve switched up my professional page/blog to rachelmauro.net, and over here, did an edit of the About Me page. Times have been changing since I started this blog in July 2008; JewishDC has been a success, and I wanted to share that story. 🙂 Thank you all for continuing to read!

In similar news, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has taken their commemoration of Officer Stephen Johns, the security guard killed by a white supremacist last summer, to a new level, as they now establish the Stephen Tyrone Johns Summer Youth Leadership Program Endowment Fund. Open to 50 teenagers, it strives to continue to teach the lessons of the Holocaust. Click here for more information.

Pickle Eating Joins Sixth & I Trivia Contest

The stage is set for Sixth & I's third annual pickle eating contest / photo taken by Rachel Mauro

The Sixth & I Trivia Contest, co-sponsored in part with B’nai B’rith, has become a regular, highly popular monthly attraction in Chinatown, but every now and then, they add a special twist. This Thursday, that attraction was the synagogue’s third annual pickle eating contest, held between rounds one and two of trivia.

Twelve contestants, including two “walk-ins” sat down in the main sanctuary to gorge themselves on this favorite Jewish treat. The rules were simple—whoever consumed the most of the three pounds of pickles before them at the end of five minutes would be declared the winner and would get his/her name placed on the official pickle eating placard.

Amidst the rancorous cheers of the audience cheering on their friends from the pews, this event was as exciting as any county fair food eating contest. After the five minutes were up, contestants were offered water and bins for up-chucking, though only one person seemed to have trouble in that regard, spitting out bits of pickle to the renewed screams of the crowd.

By the way, contestant Justin took the gold, with only 14 ounces of pickle remaining. You can see him here, in this Sixth & I video, in the blue shirt as the camera pans left. Also, watch the action up close and personal. You may never eat another pickle again. 😛

Sunday is Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. It was decided by the Israeli government in 1953 to fall on the 27th day of Nissan, a week after the conclusion of Passover. Throughout the world, Jews and gentiles mourn the millions of victims of Nazi Germany.

Here in town, the congressionally-sanctioned United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is spearheading Days of Remembrance, which provides resources for American communities to commemorate the event. This year’s theme is Stories of Freedom: What You Do Matters.

Other educational organizations acknowledge the Holocaust and genocide in general with these offerings listed below. If you have some time, consider attending, and add your voice to the chorus, which shouts out in unison: Never Again.

Sunday, April 11: Yom Ha’Shoah

DCJCC Events: Among the Righteous (film) and Keepers of Memory
DCJCC, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Among the Righteous delves into Holocaust stories within Arab lands; Keepers of Memory deals with healing practices as led by psychotherapist Vivien Dietz.

Yom Ha’Shoah v’Hagvurah
B’nai Israel Congregation, 3 p.m.
Includes a Dor L’Dor program bringing survivors to talk to youth, a community commemoration, and B’nai B’rith International-sponsored Unto Every Person there is a Name. JSSA will also be in attendance.

Kemp Mills Synagogue: Yom Ha’Shoah Program
Kemp Mills Synagogue, 7 p.m.
Dr. Werner Cohen, husband of the late poet and Holocaust survivor Hilda Stern Cohen, will be speaking.
