How are you celebrating High Holidays?

As August draws to a close, I’m aware that I’ve attended very few events around Jewish DC for the past few months. Due to vacation, illness and family tragedy, I haven’t had as much time. More than that, of course, is how summer tends to be a slower time overall, more people escaping the District before the cold settles in, I suppose. In a few weeks, High Holidays will herald in some classes and other fun events.

But then I realized I haven’t exactly been keeping to myself; last week, I started rehearsing to sing with Adas Israel’s High Holiday choir! Look for me on Rosh Hashanah Day Two. 😀

It feels nice and exciting to herald in the Jewish New Year in such a proactive way. I hope that you find traditions meaningful to you with which to welcome 5770!

In the meantime, let’s hope the last dog days of summer aren’t too dang hot! 😛

In the spirit of President Obama’s United We Serve campaign, the Washington, DC Jewish Community Center has put out a special day geared towards young, Jewish professionals—MITZVAHstock!

Taking place on Sunday, September 13, participants have the chance to volunteer at one of two locales—cleaning the grounds of the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens or helping to renovate an apartment building in Columbia Heights for residents with HIV/AIDS.

Following a morning of service will be a 3 pm happy hour at Bar Louie, a perfect way to treat yourself for a job well done.

Local organizations are also pulling their weight together—co-sponsoring MITZVAHstock with DCJCC are organizations such as ACCESS DC, B’nai B’rith International, Birthright Israel NEXT, GesherCity DC, Moishe House of Silver Spring, NextGen, Sixth & I, the Avodah/AJWS partnership, Yachad and YP@AI.

Walk-ins won’t be accepted, so RSVP by September 8 for a spot! Check out the Facebook page for more information.

Looking for a new way to bolster your community service around town? JCorps, an organization designed for Jewish volunteering, has just started a chapter in DC! It’s mission is to bring young Jewish adults of all denominations in the name of service.

Started in New York, JCorps has moved to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Montreal, Toronto, Los Angeles and London as well. 170 schools are affiliated as well, according to the website. Volunteer opportunities are vast, ranging from hunger relief to environmental projects.

Join their events list through the website, or check out their Facebook page for more info.

In a different kind of service, Sixth & I has tweeted and Facebook-messaged to urge its fans to vote for Shelton Zuckerman as our Jewish Community Hero. Put together by UJC, umbrella to North American Jewish Federations, this contest features voting for local heroes who’ve helped keep Judaism alive. Mr. Zuckerman, you should remember, purchased Sixth & I when it was about to be turned into a night club, and helped pave the way for it’s revitalization as a thriving DC center for Jewish life.

…but not only can you vote for heroes, you can also nominate them! Check this site out! This contest goes ’til October 8.

This afternoon, GLOE sent out an email mailing, announcing a candlelit vigil for tonight, August 3, 8:15 p.m., in Dupont, to condemn last week’s murders of two LGBT youths in Tel Aviv.

The unknown shooter, a man in black, is still at large, according to CNN.

Speakers confirmed for this evening’s event, according to the email, include Raby Toby Manewith of DC’s LGBT synagogue, Bet Mishpachah, Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of Orthodox congregation, Ohev Shalom, and Zvi Bellin of the National Engagement Associate, Nehirim: GLBT Jewish Culture & Spirituality.
