Dozens of people crammed into the bar Wednesday night to celebrate Yom Ha’azmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, as sponsored by Sixth & I, NextGen, GesherCity and Birthright Israel NEXT.

The Lotus Lounge was an auspicious choice for this outing, donned in its Buddha statues, eastern flower motifs, and, for tonight, Israeli flags. 😛 Israeli snacks and sushi utensils donned the tables were young professionals could go to mingle with their drinks.

Early in the evening, event staff announced that they would play songs by Coolooloosh, one of the hottest Israeli bands, which is playing at Sixth & I and sponsored by Birthright on Saturday. Also available among the many pamphlets was information on GesherCity’s upcoming Monday performance by comedian Greg Behrendt, who is also co-author of He’s Just Not That Into You. And click on over to NextGen’s upcoming trip to Moscow!

Tomorrow is Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. It was decided by the Israeli government in 1953 to fall on the 27th day of Nissan, a week after the conclusion of Passover. Throughout the world, Jews and gentiles mourn the millions of victims of Nazi Germany.

Here in town, the congressionally-sanctioned United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is spearheading Days of Remembrance, which provides resources for American communities to commemorate the event. President Obama will deliver a keynote address from the Capitol Rotunda this Thursday.

Other educational organizations acknowledge the Holocaust and genocide in general with these offerings listed below. If you have some time, consider attending, and add your voice to the chorus, which shouts out in unison: Never Again.

Art Exhibits at Your Local JCCs

So Passover’s over; time to put away your matzah (if you choose) and leaven your bread once again. The community’s been kind of quiet as we sat around familial seders, recounting our freedom from bondage. It’s been awhile since I’ve personally been out on the town, and part of me thinks I’d like to start with something more simple and less interactive than joining a concert or a class. So for our mutual benefit, I include below a list of the exhibition showings at our local Jewish Community Centers—JCC of GW, JCC of NV and DCJCC. Enjoy!

We’re just days away from Passover, one of Judaism’s most important holidays, which tells of our exodus from slavery in Egypt to freedom as a united people living under Jewish law.

A week in duration, the highlights are largely family affairs, a seder celebrated at home.

But is that an excuse for “Jewish DC” to shut down for awhile? No way! Enjoy this cropping of public Passover outings. And chag sameach (happy holidays!)
