The Jewish Literary Festival 2008

The National Book Festival is not the only book geekery we Jewish D.C.ers can gear ourselves up for in the coming weeks. Starting on Sept, 14th and going ‘til the 24th, the DCJCC will present The Hyman S. & Freda Bernstein Jewish Literary Festival of 2008!

The Jewish Literary Festival is a great chance for scholars to meet the public at large, and for Jewish organizations to network with each other. Hillel International President Wayne Firestone, for example, is examining texts and interviews having to do with philanthropist Edgar M. Bronfman on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 7:30 p.m., sponsored in part by Birthright Israel NEXT. Also on Tuesday, at 10 a.m., Richard Michelson, award-winning poet and children’s book author, will be reading and acting out from his book A Is For Abraham: A Jewish Family Alphabet under the sponsorship of The Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation’s Capital. At the opposite end of academia, Jacques Berlinerblau, director of GWU’s Program for Jewish Civilization at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service will be presenting on his book, Thumpin’ It: The Use and Abuse of the Bible in Today’s Presidential Politics, on Friday, Sept. 19 at noon. Sure sign you’re in Washington. 😉

The DCJCC’s departments are presenting as well—some examples are GesherCity/J on Demand hosting Camp Camp: Where Fantasy Island Meets Lord of the Flies (facebook link) on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m., and the Stuart S. Kurlander Program for Gay & Lesbian Outreach (GLOE) sponsoring Andrea Askowitz’s My Miserable, Lonely Lesbian Pregnancy on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m., and Masha Gessen’s Blood Matters: From Inherited Illness to Designer Babies, How the World and I Found Ourselves in the Future of the Gene, on closing night at 6 p.m.

Non-Jewish co-sponsors of events include the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, Rainbow Families, DC, Busboys and Poets, the Mautner Project, the Institute for Higher Education Policy, The Embassy of France, La Maison Francaise, and The French-American Cultural Foundation. *wipes brow*

…obviously, I can’t name everyone involved, but let me give a brief shout out to my inspirations and fellow fiction writers—Adam Langer, Peter Manseau, Elisa Albert, Darin Strauss, and Eileen Pollack. I hope to make it to some of their panels!
